Keep reading to find out what you need to do to make your move a breeze.

I’m Moving, What Now?

Let’s face it; moving isn’t easy. In fact, for many it’s downright scary! According to experts, any change can cause stress, even if it’s good, and moving is no exception. Whether you’re relocating around town or across the country, there’s no denying how big a change moving can be.

For some, stress can zap away energy and motivation, causing procrastination, which leads to more stress. Talk about a crazy cycle! The good news is, moving is temporary, and if you just push through, before you know it, you’ll have everything done.

That’s why we’ve made this checklist. It’ll help you keep everything in line, so you don’t forget any important steps or details. We didn’t include the “big things” like finding a trustworthy moving company, researching your new neighborhood, or planning your commute; Instead, we’ve focused on the basics of your planning and preparation.

So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get into it so you can tackle your moving to-do list today!

Get Rid of Everything You Don’t Need

One thing most people struggle with is getting rid of stuff they don’t need. Especially if you haven’t moved in a while, chances are your home is filled with decor, clothing, and more that you don’t use anymore. Simply packing your “junk” and moving it to your new home isn’t the answer; it’s time to make some hard decisions. Clearing out the excess is one of the best ways to feel in control, especially at a time when you may struggle with feeling like your life is out of control. Plus, when you donate your unused items to a charity, you can feel good about helping others.

Gather Your Important Documents

Making sure you have all of your important documents in one place is essential during a move. It’s so easy to lose or misplace these things during the chaos of packing and unpacking. Some items you should keep separate and secure include:

  • Credit Cards
  • Checks
  • Memorabilia
  • Military Records
  • Marriage Records
  • Dental and Medical Records
  • Birth Certificates
  • Passports
  • Wills
  • Stock Certificates

Get Ready for Your New Home in Advance

There’s multiple things you can do before you move into your new home to make the process easier. They include:

  • Set up a safe deposit box
  • Find a new bank
  • Get your utilities, internet, electric, and water set up
  • Find new doctors

If you’re planning an out of state move, you’ll only have a short amount of time to register your vehicle with the DMV, so be sure to contact them and set up an appointment right away.

You’ll also want to let your insurance company know you’ve moved and transfer your homeowner’s insurance. You can find a local insurance broker who will get you set up with the right policy to fit your needs.

Get a Moving Kit from the Post Office

Changing your address at the post office is the best way to ensure your mail gets to your new location. This step is especially important for billing statements, magazines, subscriptions, and to keep in touch with family and friends.

Record Important Contacts

Having your important contacts on hand will save you time and stress. Put them in your Notes app for easy access and look them up when needed. Popular contacts include:

  • Doctors
  • Landlords
  • Your realtor
  • Your moving company
  • Etc.

Remember the Utilities

Planning to disconnect the utilities at your old house and reconnect them in the new one is one step you don’t want to forget. Plan to have them stopped at the previous property the day after you move and connected at the new one the day before you arrive. Not only will this step save you money, but it’ll ensure you don’t have to move into your new home in the dark or without water, heat, or air conditioning. Utilities to remember include:

  • Water
  • Sewer
  • Trash Removal
  • Gas
  • Electricity
  • Cable/Satellite TV
  • Internet Service Provider (ISP)

Get to Know the Neighborhood

You should also make sure that you’re familiar with your new neighborhood and the surrounding area. Get to know the local businesses and restaurants, as well as any landmarks or other points of interest nearby.

If you have children, it’s especially important to get them acclimated to their new surroundings before school starts back up again. Take them on a tour of their school, if possible, and help them meet some of the other kids who live in the area.

The more prepared you are for your move, the easier it will be when the time comes. With a little bit of planning and forethought, you can make sure that your move is as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Moving is always a chaotic and stressful experience, but this guide can make it more manageable. With a bit of planning, your move can go as smoothly as possible and that you don’t have to worry about any of the logistics.
